Check this before you start cutting
A downed tree is the most common situation where a homeowner decides to handle it alone, and the most common place that goes wrong. Three things to look at first:
- Tension and compression. A trunk propped on its limbs or on a bank is loaded. Cutting in the wrong place makes it spring or roll.
- The root plate. If the root ball lifted, it can drop back as weight comes off the trunk.
- What's underneath. Irrigation, septic components, fencing, and utility runs are easy to damage while dragging sections out.
